This series of screenprints celebrates the rich diversity and inherent beauty of Toronto's and Canada's multicultural society, as symbolised through the design of the basswood tree leaf. The basswood, native to much of temperate North America and notably abundant in southern Ontario, plays a vital ecological role by providing habitat and nourishment for various species. Its elegant, jagged-edged heart-shaped leaves also serve as a distinctive ornamental feature, adorning many homes. I have chosen the basswood for its symbolic resonance and visual uniqueness. The heart-shaped leaf not only represents the tree's natural beauty but also serves as a metaphor for the universal human experience. Just as the leaf's appearance can vary in patterns and colours, reflecting our diverse cultural backgrounds, it ultimately underscores our shared humanity at the core. Through this series, I aim to reflect the unity that underlies our diversity and celebrate the common threads that connect us all.
